Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble polymer obtained by partial or complete hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate. Its chemical formula is [C₂H₄O]n. It appears as a white or off-white powder or granules, is non-toxic and odorless, and forms a transparent, viscous solution in water.

1. Textile and Paper Industry (Main Application)
Used as a sizing agent, adhesive, and sizing agent to improve fiber strength, flexibility, and tensile strength. In papermaking, it enhances paper strength and improves printability.
2. Adhesives and Building Materials
A major component of wood glue, water-soluble glue, and paint adhesives. Used in wallpaper glue, putty powder, and cement reinforcing materials, etc., with strong adhesion and is environmentally friendly and non-toxic.
3. Films and Packaging Materials
Made into water-soluble films and biodegradable packaging films, used in laundry detergent pods, pesticide slow-release films, and pharmaceutical packaging films. Environmentally friendly, soluble, and easily degradable.
4. Polymer Additives and Emulsifiers
Used as a stabilizer and dispersant in emulsion polymerization. Used as a protective colloid in the production of PVC, PVAc, coatings, and latex.
5. Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics
As a pharmaceutical excipient, eye drop base, and film-forming agent for facial masks. Safe, non-irritating, and biocompatible.
6. Agriculture and Other Fields:
Used as a soil moisture retainer, seed coating agent, ceramic binder, and raw material for 3D printing consumables (PVA support material).
